Warren Cullar
Austin, Texas
Cullar's academic background includes a Masters of Fine Arts from The Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Abilene Christian College, Abilene, Texas. A fulltime artist for more than 30 years, several years ago, with his business partner Kevin Box and wife, Kitty Biel, Cullar established the Garden of Gods Sculpture Center near Santa Fe.
"Collecting stones has always been part of my life. When I was ten years old my father brought me a book on geology and I then spent many a Sunday afternoon at the gravel pit collecting rocks. They were more than just rocks to me. Picking them up, noticing the color weight and texture, I delighted in each treasure found. Today these rocks have become my palette.
With these stones as my armature and clay as a soft, malleable material, I work on sculpture with a spiritual force. I add and subtract to their surfaces, stacking and forming the stones into complete statements. This brings these simple objects into a relationship that changes their significance. Frozen in bronze, I have made these statements available for your interpretation...." Cullar on The Stacked Stone Series.
Currently: Three Cullar sculptures on the Sculpture Ranch and three pieces in the Interior Galleries. |
