BETTYE HAMBLEN TURNER
Hamblen Turner with Galahad

Paladin has arrived!  Fifth in the Longhorn Bull series,
by Bettye Hamblen Turner, Paladin is installed on the
Sculpture Ranch. Constructed of carbon and stainless
steel, and chrome. Paladin measures 89" x 93" x 128".

Sculpture is both exploration and expression. With a welder and a plasma cutter I can articulate the feelings that words trivialize, explore the subtle strings that connect us all. I begin each piece by playing “What if?” as I sort through a pile of auto parts, bits of farm equipment, swing sets, and a stack of new steel. I pay attention to the formal aspects of design with emphasis on gesture, but ultimately let the metal guide me. The sculpture develops its own voice. My job is to serve as another tool. I do the physical labor  and let the sculpture come alive through me. Once my work is finished, each viewer contributes to the life cycle of the sculpture. I am delighted to see some one  run their hands over my steel animals. When a whimsical piece evokes spontaneous laughter, I  know I have added something good to my world.

After college in San Antonio, myriad jobs in Dallas and Ft. Worth, and welding classes in Killeen, I returned to West Texas where I was raised. I live in Miles, northeast of San Angelo, with my husband and four dogs. Miles is a farm community of 800 where people still keep chickens in their yards. Goats, cattle, and horses dot the pastures interspersed between cotton and grain fields. I have a large welding shop behind my home, a painting studio inside, and a wealth of neighbors willing to lend a helping hand.
