Sculpture is both exploration and expression. With a welder and a plasma cutter I can articulate the feelings that words trivialize, explore the subtle strings that connect us all. I begin each piece by playing “What if?” as I sort through a pile of auto parts, bits of farm equipment, swing sets, and a stack of new steel. I pay attention to the formal aspects of design with emphasis on gesture, but ultimately let the metal guide me. The sculpture develops its own voice. My job is to serve as another tool. I do the physical labor  and let the sculpture come alive through me. Once my work is finished, each viewer contributes to the life cycle of the sculpture. I am delighted to see some one run their hands over my steel animals. When a whimsical piece evokes spontaneous laughter, I  know I have added something good to my world. Bettye Hamblen Turner
